SAPP Member Ruth Hall Joins Opening Plenary of International Conference on Global Land Grabbing in Bogotá (Full Video)

The Global Land Grabbing Conference takes place at the Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá, Colombia. The institution is a key collaborator in the „Sharing a Planet in Peril“ (SAPP) Network. The conference addresses urgent challenges related to land, water, and natural resource grabbing. It provides a space for exchange and action that brings together diverse perspectives, including academics, social movements, and government entities. This event is organized by the Land Deals Politics Initiative (LDPI), which for over ten years has brought together over 500 participants, including academics, policymakers, and activists from more than 25 countries, to study and confront landgrabbing. The selection of Bogotá as the venue for 2024 stems from the significance of land debates on the Colombian public agenda.

As one of the main organizers of the conference, SAPP member Ruth Hall moderated the opening plenary session on „Global Land Grabbing and Responses to them“. In addition, she facilitated a session entitled „Global Land Activism: What relevance?“, drawing on her vast experience as a member of the University of the Western Cape’s „Institute for Poverty Land and Agrarian Studies“ (PLAAS). The institute focuses on research, policy engagement, teaching and training about the dynamics of chronic poverty and structural inequality in Southern Africa, with a particular emphasis on the key role of restructuring and contesting land holding and agro-food systems. The University of the Western Cape and PLAAS are key collaborators in the „Sharing a Planet in Peril“ (SAPP) research network.
